Why did everyone have a bald spot in the 1970s?

In every American 70s flick I've seen, even guys with full heads of hair are sporting bald spots. They were as common for men as the long, straight Cher cut was for women. Was it an attempt to bolster the yarmulke market? Was it a side-effect of perms being permissible for men? Surely someone else has noticed.
